The single joint of the jointed Pelham creates a nutcracker action within the mouth, so is considered to be more severe than the french link or lozenge.
Pelham bits attempt the same results as a double bridle, but using only one bit.
They work on the points of control in the mouth, plus the poll and curb groove. The result of pressure on the curb groove, is a pivoting action, causing the head to tilt into the conventional ‘on the bit’ position.
